In 1982, two women disappear together in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Five and six months later, their bodies are discovered—but it seems they died only weeks ago. What happened to Julie Schossow and Marilyn Putt?
I searched Reddit and was surprised not to see a writeup of this case, particularly when it has been mentioned with serial killers including Leonard Lake and Zodiac (although, IMO, both seem unlikely suspects). Much of the accessible coverage (e.g., from the El Dorado DA) lacks details about the circumstances of their disappearance. I apologize in advance that this isn’t the smoothest writeup, but I’m trying to weave together details from a couple of different sources into a cohesive and accurate account. The Disappearance Julie Schossow, 25, and Marilyn Putt, 27, were close friends. They had both worked as blackjack dealers at the Harrah's Casino in South Lake Tahoe, on the border of Nevada and California, since May 1980. Marilyn had a 5-year-old son, Jason, and they had lived in a rented house at 725 Los Angeles Avenue since October 1981. The Putts shared the house with a roommate, Colleen Gore, who often helped take care of Jason. Schossow was in between apartments and temporarily living in the home as well. Neighbors recalled there were often many cars at the house, although there weren’t wild or noisy parties there. Jason was often seen playing in the snow with other neighborhood children. On January 12, 1982, Schossow and Putt had both worked at Harrah’s and then returned home after their shift. What is known about the intervening hours seems to come largely from their roommate, Colleen Gore. Schossow and Putt told Gore they were going “to party,” and at approximately 1 AM, a car horn sounded outside of the house and the women left. Both victims were seen drinking together at the Rendezvous Bar inside Harrah’s and leaving a bar with some men that evening, however I do not know if this happened before they returned home or after they went out again to party. Colleen told police that sometime during the night, Schossow came back to pick up her car. Putt called 11 hours later (unclear if this is at noon on January 13, or 11 hours after Schossow returned for the car) and said they had “met a couple of rich guys” and were headed to Sacramento or San Francisco. Putt asked Gore to babysit her son. Gore did not report the women missing for four days. This would have been approximately January 17. On February 2, police found Schossow’s brown Honda in the Harrah’s parking lot, covered in snow and with flat tires. Police said this indicated the car had been there since the day the women went missing, January 13. (What is mystifying is why the police knew the women were missing since January 17, knew Schossow’s car was missing, and knew both women worked at Harrah’s—yet apparently didn’t check that parking lot until February 2.) Note this interesting passage in an article from February 18, 1982, in the Reno Gazette-Journal: “The neighbors and some of the women’s co-workers from Harrah’s are reluctant to talk about Putt and Schossow. One Los Angeles Avenue woman said she was worried about retribution from the ‘two men the girls were with that night,’ and the Harrah’s workers have been ordered by casino officials not to talk about the missing dealers.” Discovery of the Bodies On June 6, 1982, almost six months later, the body of Marilyn Putt was discovered in the South Fork of the American River, one mile west of an area known as Chili Bar off of Highway 193. Her body was nude and had been weighted down with chains and binding material and the cause of death appears to be ligature strangulation, with the time of death being estimated at 6-8 weeks prior to her body being found. One month later, on July 9, 1982, the body of Julie Schossow was discovered also in the South Fork of the American River, approximately 150 yards from where Marilyn Putt's body had been discovered. She had a cord tightly wrapped around her neck two times and the coroner could not rule out the fact that she may have been bound together with Marilyn Putt. The cause of death appears to be ligature strangulation, with the time of death being estimated at 6-8 weeks prior to her body being found. Given the discrepancy between the time the women went missing and the estimated time of death, it is believed that the women were held captive for approximately three months, believed to be somewhere in between South Lake Tahoe and Placerville. Other events or potential leads *Notably, another woman, Debney Lynn Lobanoff, 28, went missing not long before these women in December 1981. Her nude body was found floating in the Slab Creek Reservoir on July 3, 1982, in between the discoveries of Putt’s and Schossow’s bodies and approximately 7.5 miles upstream. According to her husband, Debney left with two “biker-type” men. This case also remains unsolved. *In 2016, the El Dorado District Attorney’s Office launched a campaign to revive this cold case and made a specific request: “If there’s anyone out there that’s directly involved with or associated with the Church of Scientology in South Lake Tahoe, you may or may not know you have information that could be helpful, so please contact us.” The DA’s website further notes, “Although not a member herself, Marilyn Putt was closely associated with several leading members of the Church of Scientology.” *In February this year, the El Dorado DA’s office announced they had used genetic genealogy databases to identify Joseph Holt, a local real estate worker, as the man who kidnapped and killed a woman, Brynn Rainey, in 1977 and a teenaged girl, Carol Andersen, in 1979. Rainey was last seen at a bar just before her 2 AM shift at a South Lake Tahoe Casino; her body was found in a shallow grave and her cause of death was believed to be strangulation or suffocation. Andersen disappeared on her way home from a party near a South Lake Tahoe ski resort. Her body was found dumped by the side of the road a few miles away; she had been bound and strangled. Unfortunately, justice evaded Holt as he died in 2014. Questions --How is it that the women weren’t reported missing for so many days? January 13, 1982, was a Wednesday—it seems, especially during ski season, that it’s unlikely that both of them would have had multiple consecutive days off of work and over a weekend, but it appears that no one (Harrah’s or the roommate) reported the women missing until Saturday or Sunday. --The quotation from the anonymous neighbor is also odd—why would they be worried about retribution? Were these two men known to locals, but perhaps not to the women? Although they had both been there for some time, they were both transplants. --Were they held captive for months, or is there another explanation for the discrepancy in between their date of disappearance and apparent times of death? --Why is the DA currently inquiring about the Church of Scientology? --Holt’s MO doesn’t sound dissimilar from the circumstances of Putt and Schossow’s case except that evidence is pointing towards two men. Could Holt have had or later taken on a partner? It’s interesting to note that he worked in real estate given it appears the women were held captive. What do you think happened to Julie and Marilyn? The Vigilante and Master Thief vs The World (Part 2)
Kendalls' words have weighed heavily on my mind since last we spoke. As soon as the boat docked our eyes locked on like snipers on targets.A feeling of relief and worry hit me All at once as he spoke …. "Welcome to Cuba, we'll get started as soon as you're ready..(a slight pause as I thought for a moment...for what?)....for a partnership. I want to take this worldwide. I'll finance your kills if you help me rob banks and casinos. Prepare yourself there's a storm coming...a big one" Seems as though my good friend and former inmate has been quite busy since he fled the states and landed in Havana. I've been settled here only a few days now. Quite a culture shock to be honest. The weather, girls and food is all really nice.Though it's still very different. Upon my arrival Kendall had supplied me with some clothes, a new phone and a key to my apartment. A fully furnished one. It's quite nice actually…. Who could possibly turn down such an offer with great hospitality and welcome? (Not me I thought) Now THATS a friend damnit! After roaming the town and visiting a few clubs the past few nights...I can already see potential targets well within my grasp. In no hurry of course. We have nothing but time...and money. Suppose you CAN live a good life of crime. If only for a short while. It has been some time now since my last kill. I would have been hard at work killing fellow inmates in prison if not for so much of my time devoted to an almost impossible yet impeccable escape. To be completely honest, becoming a Vigilante while having a conscience can be quite difficult at times. You must be wondering… 'Does he enjoy killing...do you get off on it? Do you need to kill?' Well...yes ...yes and yes. Let me explain. Removing evil people from this world is my life's work! You may even say I'm proud of it. (Why wouldn't I be) So when the worst type of person is out on the street or say simply not in prison where they belong...they're out harming innocent women kids and blue collar guys. I feel it's my duty to remove them. And I do so, Quite well actually. Yes I LOVE killing those bastards. Do I need to kill? Well yeah...I mean what else would I do?...stare at a computer monitor all day or some bullshit factory job I hate? Listen, those jobs are all well and good and I know someone has to do them. Killing bad guys is my calling in life…(as for the last attempt, a woman) Don't worry I haven't forgotten about that horribly corrupt judge...Also wondering how Maranda is doing. Anyway going back to the States anytime soon is out of the question. Both , myself and Kendall are on the FBIs Top 10 Most wanted List. Maybe one day I'll 'take care' of the unfinished business back home. For now it's time to set my sights on some Cubans. Sorry those of you from Cuba. But you got some evil pieces of shit who are going to die damnit. Hell I'd kill Castro if he wasn't already dead. Course our government failed to complete that task for decades. Leave it up to the government to F*ck it all up...as per usual. You want something done right…. Know what else is better? Me at a bar hitting on some smokin' hott tanned chicks, meanwhile downing some ice cold beers while on the lookout for my next target. That's what I wish I could do...However, there are more pressing matters at hand.Havana isn't a very big place compared to what im used to. You can get around by bus, boat, taxi bike and even a train which I learned the hard way...sucks. There is no practical way of getting around Havana by train. Cuba's poorly maintained rail network doesn't call at any suburban stations and there is no subterranean metro line. You can rent a car or motorcycle if need be. The currency here is quite odd and im still getting used to it.The first thing you should know about the Cuban monetary system is that Cuba uses two official currencies: The CUP (Cuban Peso) and the CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso). The Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC) is one of Cuba’s two official currencies and the one most frequently used by travelers. It’s also the more valuable of the two. The value of the CUC is pinned to the U.S. dollar so that 1 CUC will always equal 1 U.S. dollar. However, there are some exchange and bank fees that you will have to cover. The CUP (also locally known as “moneda nacional“) is primarily used by residents of Cuba. As an illegal alien myself, I probably won’t use this one very often, but it may benefit me to carry a small amount of CUP for small expenses like street food, bus fare, flea market finds. For comparison, 1 CUP is only worth about 4 U.S. cents. The CUP has the same bill denominations that the CUC has, but you can find larger bills of 250, 500 and 1000 pesos. Havana's metro bus service calls on a relatively modern fleet of Chinese-made 'bendy' buses and is far less dilapidated than it used to be. These buses run regularly along 17 routes, connecting most parts of the city with the suburbs. Fares are 40 centavos (five centavos if you're using convertibles), which you deposit into a small slot in front of the driver when you enter. Cuban buses are crowded and little used by tourists. Everyone says to guard your valuables closely. And I do so...with a handgun. (Or at least I will when that crazy bastard supplies me with one…) A text has just randomly appeared on my cell phone (presumably from Kendall) to check out this particular club on the other side of town. I won't give the name of the establishment , for I plan to do some reconnaissance first. I'd rather not have too many eyes on the place just in case one of you Cubans also live local. A few days pass as these same 4 men come and go while wearing floral patterned shirts, who are also sporting strange zodiac symbol tattoos and tan shorts.I notice they arrive early in the morning and stay all day. Leaving only at night. Kinda odd honestly. Pretty sure these guys are some type of hot shots in this club. You'd expect them to be wearing suits and smoking cigars…. Yes I know thats a stereotype, but it's a real thing here. See it all the time. There are tourists groups coming in daily as this is a hotspot for Cruises. It's really easy for me to blend in and be nearby the club taking pictures. Generally carrying binoculars as well. These guys sure are cocky, they do all their business out in the open while in the office on the second floor. Blinds completely up and everything. I'll continue to follow and watch them over the next few weeks so I can gather some more intel on our new friends. Should be fun. Living in Havana isn't all bad to be honest. I eat like a kid mostly, always have. And they have street vendors EVERYWHERE. Which is perfect for my lazy cheap ass. Love me some burritos. I tend to eat alot of egg and cheese sandwiches. Or salsa with chips. I really have to find a place with some killer nachos too. And churros? Don't get me started!! Oh sorry…. Right, so I've basically been stalking the 4 guys mentioned before...Hoping not to get noticed. Changing clothes often. I've acquired some ridiculous disguises also, so as not to always look exactly the same. Feel really stupid though…. Spent all this time watching these men. Learning their habits. Even put Electronic trackers on the car they all ride in…. Turns out all I had to do was give a local corrupt official some money. Now I have the full report on each man. 2 of them are partners in the club who seem to be using it as a front and selling stolen merchandise out the back. 1 man is head of security. The other is a cop on the payroll. Guess he doesn't work all that much cause he is always at this damn club. To be clear it's a gentlemen's club where they serve booze and have female dancers on stage.(I'm over here explaining it as If most of you have never been to one of these establishments) The tourists love it! (Their wives on the other hand …not so much) Not fully trusting the corrupt government official who supplied me with the information. Ultimately deciding to continue watching these modern day gangsters…. something just feels off about them. On the second night of my ongoing (investigation) I see several men begin to load up a box truck with wooden crates. Each individual large box was nearly 3 feet tall and 5 feet long. Crate after crate was placed in the back until the truck was fully loaded. The tires deflated slightly under the immense pressure from these massive crates. (No way in hell that's just pilfered electronics or cigarettes) The metal shutter door slams down until it latches shut . The last man outside follows the rest back into the club. Waiting for my moment I strike quickly. Unlatching the door handle and disengaging the metal security bar...to my amazement.. It's still unlocked. Grabbing a metal pipe nearby, I forcefully wedge the first wooden crate open closest to me. I'm immediately met with a strong odor. What the F-....Coffee beans? ( I hate the smell of coffee) This tactic of using beans is often used to fool drug K9s for when the crates are being inspected by customs. Normally coming from a foreign country on a boat disguised as a merchant ship carrying an array of supplies. Too bad it's not booze. I could use a good drink. This can't be right. Taking the metal pipe, I begin holding it in a stabbing motion. Slamming down until hitting a tough surface. Quickly I'm digging into the coffee beans like a dog in sand. There's very thick large clear plastic bags under all the beans,Which are completely filled with a white powdery substance. (Well, this sure as hell ain't sugar, I thought to myself) After puncturing the packages held within. A small sample is taken and placed in my pocket. A loud noise nearby swiftly quickens the pace in which I move.. without thinking I leap from the trucks cargo area and run to the front where I notice the keys are in the ignition. Engine is running. Hopping into the driver's seat I begin excessive acceleration, taking off at a high rate of speed. I can feel the shutter door begin to slam down until closing completely until latching. Driving on the wrong side of the street now, gaining far too many eyes. Flying in between moving and parked cars. Attempting to find a dock. I can see water in the distance. Also to my left is several beautiful scantily clad women in bikinis. Almost wrecking completely at the sight of them. I swear most automobile accidents here in Havana are caused by these gorgeous model like women! After regaining control of the large box truck I see a dock and slowly begin backing into it. The truck is in reverse, time to jump out now! This ought to make a few enemies. The truck falls rear end first and slowly sinks to the bottom of the waterway. The surprise of the lifetime will be there to greet the men when they realize it's gone. (If they haven't already) for now, I'm hitting them where it hurts. Their wallets...until I feel they are worthy of my bullets. It's been several more days now since the destruction of their product. I've mostly stayed at home as I'm still not armed. My nights have been generally spent drinking myself to sleep. The wait is killing me more than you could understand. I'm stuck in my own head. Trapped like a caged animal. Boredom is the first step to relapse. Hopefully soon my partner will outfit me with a rather large arsenal…(I'm going to need it) After doing some research, tasting the sample taken earlier and conducting a few tests in a controlled environment…I have learned what was in the back of that truck… A massive supply of Heroin. Thinking on it for a good long while. I made my decision. Yes they deserve to die.I need to kill again. I'm being tormented with each passing night. Knowing innocent people are suffering due to these monsters. Growing up seeing families torn apart and put on the streets. Babies born already addicted to drugs and young children having access to them sent me in a hate filled rage. One that can only be subsided with a righteous kill. I AM the angel of death. I must exact my vengeance upon them…. I can only think of one person to call. With that being said…. I Really ought to go check on my buddy Kendall, see what trouble he is into. Perhaps he can point me in the right direction. So i may begin my reign of terror over Cuba… Very soon, hell will be completely full. I will stop at nothing to destroy the evil which lurks cowardly in the shadows… I can't deny my fate... the anger is growing far beyond my control.... They must die. The restless nights have awakened something deep within me. Death haunts my dreams. The need to kill is rising. These city streets will overflow with disease from the wrath of my blades. The air will reek of blood, Murder is my single quest . Killing is my only future. Havana will burn before I rest….
