More Brexit Backers to Boycott
I had so much fun going putting together a short list yesterday morning, that I spent a couple of hours in the evening going through the longer list of 75 donors, cross referencing with entries in Companies House. The general concept is to highlight businesses and their owners that people may want to avoid using or support because of their funding of Brexit.
I wouldn't have been able to accomplish this so quickly if
powerbase.info hadn't already done the hard work in identifying the donors.
I was surprised by what I found. So here goes:
- Silver Cross, they make baby stuff, prams etc. https://www.silvercrossbaby.com/ (Alan Halsall, £30k donation)
- Construct Equip, plant hire in the midlands. https://www.construct-equip.co.uk/ . Gladys Bramall a BNP supporter gave £600k. Gove promised to return the donation but never did https://www.politicshome.com/news/europe/eu-policy-agenda/brexit/news/76420/michael-gove-vote-leave-could-hand-back-%C2%A3600000-ex
Bruichladdich whiskey. A pity because this is tasty stuff. John McTaggart gave 10k. He also owns Nadler Hotels Group https://www.nadlerhotels.com/ and the Waterford distillery https://waterforddistillery.ie. He has a new rum coming to market soon as well http://caneco.gd/. He holds New York real estate investments in this company http://mactaggartfp.com/ (589 + 576 + 261 5th Avenue, 183 Madison Avenue, 50 Orange Street) - Rubiks Cube. The guy who makes all the money from these isn't Erno Rubik, it's David Lytton Kremer, via his toy company Seven Towns. https://www.seventowns.com/ . £200k donation is not trivial.
- Next plc. Simon Wolfson gave £50k and he's CEO. His dad was also CEO, Baron Wolfson of Sunningdale. Father and son were both made life peers by the Conservative Party. Some people think that hereditary peerages weren't a thing anymore, but they are in this family.
- Heals Lighting. William Hobhouse is the CEO. https://www.heals.com/lighting.html. He chucked in £20k to vote leave.
- Terry Adams Inc. A Kentucky based construction firm specialising in retail and commercial. £500k!! http://www.terryadamsinc.com/Company.asp
- Dixons, Currys, Pc World. Stanley Kalms put in £30k and he's life president of these businesses. I found this gem on him - British Jewish author Tony Lerman, formerly of the Institute for Jewish Policy Research has written about feeling uncomfortable with views expressed by Kalms on Islam. Lerman recalls a meeting on 17 November 2006: There was only one 'interest' that European Jews needed to pursue in Europe, he [Kalms] said: Islam and Islamic fundamentalism. What JPR should be doing is fighting Islam, showing complete support for the two people who had stood up to Islam - Tony Blair and George Bush. Most Muslims didn't want to integrate, he said. Ultimately they would line up behind the fundamentalists. After making disparaging remarks about Islam he asserted that the problem was what Muslims were doing in their schools, in their madrassas and in their mosques cannot be controlled.
- Berkeley Homes. £12k donation via St James Group
- Albert Wiegman £28k. He's a partner in Langholm Capital, so you could avoid their brands -
Tyrells Crisps (now German owned), Dorset Cereals, Purity Soft Drinks, WoolOvers (online knitwear), Just Retirement. Also in Finland they have Farmos, and Lumene Group, and in Denmark Cane Line / Sika-Horsnaes - Annabels Nightclub in Mayfair. It's named after Annabel Goldsmith £25k. I doubt redditors are in the market for high end hookers in London, but if you are find them some place else.
- You want to avoid pubs in Norfolk? I give you Gunton Arms and Suffield Arms, owned by art dealer Ivor Braka £30k
- Getting fit in Maidstone? Don't go to Mote Hall / Maidstone Leisure Centre £10k. Controlled by Richard Stewart Ashness . He also owns https://www.jardox.com/ who make flavours for food brands.
- Legal & General Investment Management - Dame Helena Morrissey heads this up https://citywire.co.uk/wealth-managenews/helena-morrissey-and-alex-darwall-join-group-backing-brexit/a1093670
- Hiscox Insurance. Robert Hiscox £50k. He's also chair of swindon museum and art gallery trust, kenneth armitage foundation, paolozzi foundation. Rich people like to support poor artists, t'was ever thus.
- Shipping stuff in Autralia - don't use Seaway £15k. http://www.seaway.com.au/shipping-agencies/. Lady Carolina Sweeting has at least 75% of the business. here she is introducing her baby to pope francis https://www.ashmi.org/cf_enotify/view.cfm?n=1722 . Here's her link to seattle nwpatrons - also see the looted artefacts http://www.nwpatrons.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Winter-2015-final.pdf. Her husband owns Latis Homes, https://lat.is/ , and lives in Gibraltar, presumably for tax reasons.
- HR Smith, - https://www.hr-smith.com/hr-smith/about make a variety of aviation and search and rescue products for civilian and military use. £50k via Techtest.
- Reliance Security Group Brian Kingham £15k - Reliance Securtity Group https://www.rht.co.uk/
That's all I 've got for now. The Midlands Industrial Council is worth a further look
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6051200.stm. The tricks that are used to hide donations are very crafty.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/conservative/10591950/43-million-given-to-Conservatives-by-members-of-exclusive-Cameron-dining-club.html
I might have a crack at the remain funders soon.
http://powerbase.info/index.php/Category:Brexit_%E2%80%98remain%E2%80%99_donor Bet365 put in £250k, so waste your money on sports betting there rather than at IG Index.
Buy your fights from Trailfinders £1m!!
Finally, I'm happy to make corrections. In fact I would be delighted to because I'm not trying to put out anything that is not true - anything that's wrong in this list (or my previous one) throws shade over the other bits.
Edit 1
- corrected Bluichladdich. It's now safe to drink because it's owned by the French!
- Remain backer analysis is defo in the works. I've gone through all the backers on infobase, but this one needs a bit of careful thought. Remain backers split into 2 camps in general - rich Tories who gave small amounts to the conservative remain campaign (to stay in David Cameron's good books I imagine), and others who backed the non-affiliated remain campaign.
