Reading Project Rewrite Part 5 (DR2 AND Mild DR3 Spoilers)
Well, the delays are over, so I can finally get back on schedule with this series. This is part 5 of me reading the fanfic ‘Project Rewrite’ by sophie_enoshima, and sharing my thoughts on it. Here’s the last thread, if you missed it. Here’s the story if you’re reading along. Since there’s only 8 chapters left, I was tempted to binge them all together and wrap this up, but sophie has made a distinction between chapters 5 and 6, so let’s respect that. We’ll only be covering chapters 25-29 today. Spoilers for the…spicy parts of this story will be marked, but spoilers for the actual DR2 won’t be. Also yes, you read the title correctly. There are mild DR3 Spoilers in this one. They appear in the spicy parts, so they’ll be spoiler marked as well, but this is just me reminding you that if you haven’t watched DR3, you might want to give this thread a miss. We start right where the last chapter left off, with the others learning that Hajime is not the Ultimate Hope, but is in fact a reserve course student. Now, in the canon, they took this news rather well. Well, Nagito didn’t, because he believes average people are worthless in comparison to the Ultimates, but the others didn’t mind. Hajime was their friend for who is, not because they thought he was an Ultimate like them. The news doesn’t go down quite as well in this sequence. Sonia, makes a pretty compelling case; she’s not upset that Hajime’s a reserve course student, she upset that he decided to lie about it. She now has to wonder how much of the Hajime she’s got to know during their time in the killing game was real, and what else he could be hiding. These are all perfectly valid grievances. We knew all the way back in the beginning that introducing himself as the Ultimate Hope was going to come back and bite Hajime one day, so this is fair. However, Sonia’s the only one who really frames her grievance that way. The rest of them either say nothing, or come across more like Nagito, as if Hajime being a reserve course student literally offends them.
“Tsk, so we worked our asses off to get a place at that school, and you just strutted in ‘cause you could.” Fuyuhiko’s temper was rising, “Oh, so you bought your way in!” Ibuki was scowling furiously at him. “Ibuki thought you had more respect than that.”
Not only does this not make sense (Talent is the antithesis of hard work, most of these guys didn’t work to get into Hope’s Peak, at all) but it also contradicts Fuyuhiko’s character. In his FTE’s, Fuyuhiko talks about how he doesn’t think he deserves to be the heir to the Kuzuryu Clan, or the Ultimate Yakuza. He believes his sister is better than him in that regard in every way. This uppity attitude doesn’t really suit him at all. Nevertheless, Hajime is essentially ostracized from the group, literally asked to isolate himself until things have cooled off. Chiaki wants to keep meeting Hajime in private, but he believes it’s more important that she keeps her distance, keep peace within the group since they’re just got four more days until the rewrite will be complete. Monokuma also catches Hajime alone to try and proposition him into continuing the killing game, even promising to bend the rules and assist Hajime anyway he wants with the murder, but Hajime says no. Obviously…seriously, what was the point of this? Was there ever any doubt Hajime would turn the offer down? (Also, it turns out Kazuichi wrote a second suicide note, addressed to Hajime, revealing that he had regained pretty much all his memories, even pertaining to why the rewrite was happening at all, and he admires how brave Hajime has been. I guess it’s a nice silver lining right now.) So, Monokuma brings out the big guns. He calls everyone to Jabberwock park, where they find 13 gravestones, dedicated to the 13 murdered students of the Student Council Massacre, the original killing game. Between Monokuma and Nagito (who by coincidence found a file about the Kamakura project just moments ago) the group learn about Izuru Kamakura and the massacre. Monokuma then unveils the motive of this chapter…which isn’t really a motive. He just suspends the rule against killing more than 2 people. He ‘encourages’ the group to take inspiration from the massacre, and go kill everyone else, since if there’s no one else to stand on a trial with, you win automatically. Now, before I recap the next part, I want to stress, the group does NOT suspect Hajime and Izuru are one in the same. A couple of them figure it out later, but that’s not what triggers what’s about to happen. The group decide to restrain, sedate and lock Hajime up inside of the old building, literally for no other reason, than because he’s a reserve course student, and reserve course students can’t be trusted. No seriously, this is what Fuyuhiko says;
“Nagito’s right.” Fuyuhiko agreed. “This Izuru fella was on the reserve course, these people can’t be trusted.”
See what I mean when I said Sonia’s the only one who’s grievance makes sense? And everyone else has just flown off the handle and started acting like Nagito? So, Hajime basically spends a chapter locked up inside the old building. Everyone takes a shift to check in on him and bring him food, and seemingly as if the story is trying to walk back how the group has been acting so far this chapter, pretty much everyone on these shifts refer to Hajime as their friend, and tell him they don’t want to do this, they’re just scared, etc. I was one of Hajime’s harshest critics when he decided to call himself the Ultimate Hope, and yet even I find the others horribly disingenuous here. They’ve treated him like dirt ever since learning the truth, and literally locked him up for the flimsiest of reasons, and now I’m supposed to buy that they don’t really want to do this? Now, we’re about to enter the spoiler territory, and boy do I have a lot to say about the twist that’s about to occur. As I was reading this, I was 200% convinced that this was another trick by Monokuma. And maybe it still will be, we’ve got 3 more pages in the 6th case to look at next time. But as far as Chapter 5 presents what’s about to happen, it appears to all be genuine, and I cannot stress enough how much I think this hurts the story. I am not being even remotely hyperbolic when I say that, in my opinion, if there’s no other twist coming up in chapter 6 to counteract this, then what happens next is on DR3’s-Mastermind-reveal levels of nonsensicalness. …Ok, here we go. Chiaki is about to take her shift with Hajime when she collapses and starts glitching out. Hajime breaks through the door with a chair and tries to understand what’s wrong with her. Chiaki’s trying to say something about Future Foundation, but keeps glitching out, so Hajime can’t make out what she’s saying…Then, her glitching spell suddenly passes and she tells him that Future Foundation is trying to kill him. As if on cue (Which is something that happens a lot during this sequence, hence why I was convinced this was a hoax) the monitors on the islands come on with a message from…Kyosuke Munakata, who proceeds to explain his master plan. Project Rewrite, from the get go, was just an elaborate trap to lure all the Remnants back in once place, so they could all be purged at once. To ensure this, Kyosuke built in two fail-safes. First, if Hajime were ever to die in the simulation, everyone else will die alongside him. Secondly, if everyone hasn’t died by Day 20 (this is in the late hours of Day 19) then the islands will begin to self-destruct, a process that takes 2 days to complete. After which, he’ll send FF agents in the real world to Jabberwock Island to apprehend Makoto and the others. Now, I shall attempt to explain all my issues with these turn of events.
Firstly, why in the holy hell is Kyosuke telling them about any of this? If he wants them dead so badly, don’t give them information for crying out loud!
Secondly, WHY ARE YOU SO BAD AT KILLING THEM?! THEY’VE BEEN IN THIS VIRTUAL WORLD FOR DAYS! WHY DIDN’T YOU JUST KILL THEM THE MOMENT THE GAME STARTED? WHY IS YOUR SELF-DESTRUCT PROGRAM SET TO ONLY GO OFF ON DAY 20? WHY DOES YOUR SELF DESTRUCT PROGRAM START WITH THE EXTRANEOUS ISLANDS AND NOT THE ISLAND WITH THE MOTEL? IF YOU ALREADY HAVE ACCESS TO CHIAKI’S CODE, WHY DIDN’T SHE JUST KILL HAJIME THE MOMENT HE’S ALONE? YOU LINKED EVERYONE ELSE’S LIVES TO HIS! Most of the main series of Danganronpa literally makes the point that if the mastermind simply wants them dead, there’d be no need to set up such an elaborate set of rules in a killing game, so there needs to be something more to their motivations then ‘I just want to eradicate despair.’
Thirdly, if you’re going to send physical agents to the real island anyway, why not just start with that? The Remnants minds are stuck in the NWP, they’re physical bodies are defenceless. You can catch Makoto and the others by surprise instead of announcing all your intentions to them like you’ve done just now.
Fourthly, Makoto and the others were apparently supposed to have communication with Hajime the whole time, and administrator access to control what happens. This feels like some pretty big ret-cons, because the trio said nothing of the sort when they put Hajime back in. But the real problem here is that whatever Kyosuke’s code was doing to take that access away…just stops after his message. They didn’t find a way around it, it just stopped of its own accord. Again, KYOSUKE! WHY ARE YOU SO BAD AT YOUR JOB! THE STORY EVEN HAS THE GALL LATER TO HAVE CHIAKI SAY “[FUTURE FOUNDATION] TOOK EVERY PRECAUTION POSSIBLE!”
And Fifthly, don’t think I didn’t notice that attempt to ret-con the handling of Mikan! (Okay this part doesn’t hurt the story, but I’m ranting about it anyway!) Basically, a lot of the commentors didn’t like that yandere Mikan acted like Despair Disease/Remnant of Despair Mikan. This section tries to make it out as if it was all intentional. Kyosuke explains that each of the students subconsciously remembered the first killing game to some extent, causing them to ‘fly off the handle quicker’. Except nobody other than Mikan really acted this way, so this just feels like an attempt to skirt around criticism.
From here…pretty much everything else that happens in this case is a major event. So, I’ll save the rest of what I have to say for the character section. The only other thing I want to mention is that apparently there was some sort of hiatus for this story between chapters 28 and 29? And when sophie came back to the story, she decided to rewrite whatever ending she had in mind. Whatever that means for what’s left to read, I don’t know. Last minute edition I was just about finished typing this up when I realized I forgot to mention something potentially big. Towards the end, Chiaki starts talking about the graduation program, and says
”Well," Chiaki resumed. “The Future Foundation couldn't allow the graduation program to happen again.” "Why ever not?" Sonia asked, attempting to keep up. "Because it gives Monokuma and A.I. Junko too much power." Chiaki replied.
This is, to my best recollection, the first time A.I. Junko is being acknowledged as a thing at all in this story. And it seems to be in present tense? Does that mean she’s still here? That feels like something that should’ve been brought up a lot sooner than now. I mean, wouldn’t she have posed a huge risk to this plan (Both Hajime and Kyosuke’s) from the beginning? She already hacked her way around the NWP’s settings once. As is tradition for second to last instalments in this series, I’m going to give my thoughts on all the remaining characters. Chiaki: I really felt like this was going to be Chiaki’s chapter. When Hajime tells her to keep her distance from him at the beginning, it’s genuinely heart-wrenching to realise this is how Chiaki has to spend her final days; watching her friends fight amongst themselves, over one of them just trying to find a way to save them all. Unfortunately, I had a harder time getting invested in her repeatedly glitching out in the latter half, as I spent half of it convinced that it was just some sort of trick by Monokuma due to all the oddities I mentioned earlier. Fuyuhiko: It seems like the story was attempting to make Mahiru’s death from the last chapter play the same role for Fuyuhiko as Peko’s did in the canon. I applaud them for putting this new spin on Fuyuhiko’s arc, but not only have they left it really late into this story to attempt to pull it off, but the whole ‘Hajime is evil because he’s reserve course!’ movement of this chapter really interfered with those efforts. Fuyuhiko was the main proposer of Hajime’s treatment throughout this chapter and, unlike the others, the story didn’t really try to hard to endear him back to Hajime whilst he was locked in the building. They basically spent his shift arguing with each other. Gundam: ...I’m…really having a hard time thinking of what to say here. Gundam in this story…just sort of exists? The story is definitely leaning towards his ship with Sonia, but other than that, he’s been a pretty big non-factor. Hajime: If it wasn’t obvious enough already, I was rooting for Hajime hard all chapter. For as much as lying about his talent was a mistake, I felt like damn near every part of his treatment this chapter was pretty hard to justify. Kyosuke and Monokuma are also seeking to really single him out in their attempts to kill the rest of the cast, so it feels like he’s being attacked on all fronts. His ability to accept and move past Ibuki’s death towards the end is another testament to how far he’s come since the start of this story. Honestly, the only thing that kind of bugged me is why he continued to keep up his lies right up until Makoto gave him permission to finally come clean. I felt like some of the drama in this chapter could’ve been avoided if Hajime came clean a little earlier. Would they have believed him? Probably not, but it still would’ve been better to have it come out of his mouth first, instead of Monokuma’s. Ibuki: Ibuki was sort of the second biggest offender of the persecution of Hajime in this chapter, but the story at least did a better job trying to justify her actions. She’s at her stress limit. She just watched two good friends die, including the guy that fixed up her hands so she could play instruments again. The fact that it was Kazuichi’s voice that dragged her out of hiding and got her killed goes a long way to suggest how indebted to him she felt. It was definitely better handled than Fuyuhiko’s explanation, but I’m still feeling pretty conflicted over whether or not this explanation excuses how she thought the worse of Hajime and ignored everything good he’s done up until this point. Monokuma: If you’ve been following these review threads for this, or the other two fanfics I’ve covered, you probably know by now I’m not a big fan of when Monokuma gets too involved in the deaths of the characters outside of executions. So, it’s not really going to come to any surprise that him killing Ibuki doesn’t sit well with me. Yes, FF’s bug has removed the rules that bound him (not that they were really doing that properly anyway cough Ibuki’s concert cough) so there is an explanation in story, but I wasn’t very fond of it. Nagito: Had Nagito found himself playing the same role as Fuyuhiko or Ibuki did this chapter, I probably would’ve let him off for it. It would’ve been in character for him, and would’ve made for an interesting role reversal between his and Hajime’s standings with the rest of the group. Yeah, it would’ve been pretty farfetched for the group to completely forget everything that Nagito’s done to them to that extent, but the reveal from last chapter (that he was planning to kill, win the trial, and have everyone but him and Hajime executed) seems to be pretty much ignored this chapter anyway. In the end, he didn’t actually give Hajime a particularly hard time over the lie. I also have no theories as to where he is right now, I’m glad the story’s at least acknowledging that he probably wasn’t killed of screen, but I really can’t make any guesses as to what’s going to happen next. Peko: Peko kind of struck a pretty neutral balance in this chapter. She’s still pretty much a satellite character to Fuyuhiko, so she sided with all the decisions to restrain and imprison Hajime, but doesn’t show the same level of spite as her master did. She actually showed some compassion and understanding to the possibility of him massacring the student council incident. Acknowledging that it was still a killing game at the end of the day, so what Izuru did in principle is no different to what all the culprits in this killing game have done is a fair point, and it’s a nice use of Peko’s background to deliver it. Sonia: She managed to steer clear of the mess that was the Hajime situation in the first half, but I still don’t really have much to say about her either. Maybe you can argue her last minute advise to Hajime, about letting Chiaki go and thinking about his death will doom everyone else, is a fitting message to come from a princess, someone who understands the need to examine the bigger picture and put the needs of the masses first? Yeah, Sonia says she’s basically just a figurehead in Novaselic currently, but her FTE’s give off the impression that she wants to do more for her kingdom, so showing this wisdom was a nice call. Normally, this is the point in the story where I give my survivor predictions, but I haven’t got the foggiest idea. We’ve pretty much abandoned all traces of the typical DR formula at this point. I’m not even convinced we’ll get a chapter 6-type trial. Given that what remains of this story was written after DR3 and V3 came out I think there’s a solid chance sophie’ll follow the canon and have everyone escape their NWP in the end, sans Chiaki. This story tends to do well when it focuses on the here and now (the cases themselves have met a pretty consistent quality) but falters slightly at setting up long-term plotlines (see everything I’ve said about characters surviving longer than the canon.) Maybe that’s why this late game plot twist just isn’t really landing with me. It attempts to recontextualise things that were set in motion weeks ago, and it just doesn’t add up when you step back and look at it from afar. There’s still three chapters to go, and the story can still make me eat my words and reveal something that makes everything unearthed in this chapter into a masterpiece. I’m still holding out hope.

We’ve all seen enough gangster movies to know that, when a certain person breaks the rules of a criminal organization, there is a price to pay. This might come in the form of being ‘whacked’ as the Italian Mafia of the East Coast put it, but it may also involve some kind of monetary restitution, paying a little extra to a capo or mob boss as a way of avoiding the other form of punishment mentioned. But in Japan, the Yakuza Clans have another method of atoning for certain transgressions, what is known as ‘Yubitsume’. Yubitsume can literally be translated to ‘finger shortening’ in English, and is the act of amputating one’s one little finger. It is a Japanese ritual undertaken by those who wish to apologize for offenses to another, just as much a method of punishment as a way to show sincere guilt and remorse to an offended party. It is an ancient and storied ritual of atonement, but these days, it is primarily performed by the Japanese criminal groups known collectively as the Yakuza, one of the world’s most infamous mafia groups. The act of Yubitsume is believed to have originated with a group known as the ‘Bakuto’, commonly acknowledged to be the predecessors of the modern yakuza Bakuto plied their trade in towns and highways in feudal Japan, playing traditional dice games such as hanafuda. They were considered social outcasts, living outside the laws and norms of society, but were often hired by local governments to gamble with laborers, winning back worker's earnings in exchange for a percentage. If a person was unable to pay off a gambling debt, Yubitsume was sometimes considered an alternative form of repayment, a message to other debtors to pay back the money they owed, least they suffer a similar fate. But what made the little finger so significant? The answer is quite simple. In Japanese swordsmanship, known as ‘Kendo’ in Japanese, the little finger's grip is the tightest on the hilt. Therefore, someone who had lost their little finger was unable to grip their sword properly, making them much easier to defeat in a stand up fight, and in turn, making them something of a burden, much more dependent on the protection of others. On top of being intensely painful, the act would mean a lasting humiliating for those that endured it. It was not just a temporary means of punishment, it was something that would effect a person for the rest of their lives. In order to perform Yubitsume, a person lays down a small clean cloth and lays their left hand onto the cloth facing down. Then, using an extremely sharp knife, often a Japanese Tanto, the person cuts off the section of his left little finger above the top knuckle on the finger or the tip of the finger. They then wrap the severed portion in the cloth and submit the contents graciously to the Godfather of his particular clan, known as the ‘Oyabun’ in Japanese. If a more grievous offence is committed, then the person moves on to the next joint of the finger to perform the ritual. Multiple transgressions might well mean cutting off portions of the right little finger too, if no more joints of the left finger remain. The practice of Yubitsume can also be very common among the Yakuza. Their strict hierarchical code means clan members are often found to have broken certain rules, and a Yakuza can be just as recognizable by the absence of sections of their little fingers as they are for the full body tattoos they sport under their well pressed suits. Only unlike the tattoos, which are only inked in places that can be covered up by their clothing, thus essentially concealing their identities from those around them, the absence of their little fingers can be extremely noticeable to those around them. And in recent years, since many Yakuza have sought to leave their various clans, or at least disguise their membership of the organization; and so one Japanese doctor has found himself serving a rather dangerous clientele with a very unusual product. Thirty nine year old Shintaro Hayashi is prosthetics maker who built a career making silicone body parts for patients with breast cancer, or legs and arms for those injured in serious accidents. But a decade ago, he started to notice a change in the type of person that patronised his Tokyo-based company, Aiwa Gishi. He started to see a steady increase in men who were asking for custom made prosthetic pinkie fingers. Doctor Hayashi says there are three main reasons that Yakuza visit his business. Some clan members are dragged into his office by girlfriends worried about their reputations. Some are former Yakuza who are eager to move up the corporate ladder but worried about the repercussions of their past being exposed. Others are lifelong Yakuza who have no intention of escaping a life of crime, but need to cover up their identity for a some kind of sensitive family based event, such as a wedding or a funeral. The doctor molds silicone prosthetic pinkies, made to seamlessly mask the amputation, making for a smoother transition to the outside world. Priced at nearly $3,000 each, the fingers are carefully painted, to match the exact skin color of the client. Former yakuza members, who make up 5% of Hayashi's business, often keep several sets of fingers for different seasons, a light skinned version for winter or a tanned look for summer. Hayashi has already produced more than three hundred prosthetic fingers, and savours the positive transformation each one brings to the lives of those that wear them. Some Yakuza, who have only been made to cut off a small section of their pinkie finger, are able to hide their lack of appendage by making a permanent fist when in public, but after being forced to commit Yubitsume so many times, there comes a point when certain men can no longer hide their identities. The increasing demand for prosthetic pinkies coincides with an aggressive push to crack down on the yakuza. Gang member numbers have steadily declined, since the Anti-Organized Crime Law went into effect in 1992. But there are still more than 70,000 gang members, according to the National Police Agency. In recent years, police have clamped down on cash flows, gang activities, and passed measures aimed at pressuring legitimate businesses to cut ties with the mob, which as we may come to learn, has caused excessive levels of Yakuza violence in some areas of Japan. One ex member of the Yamaguchi-gumi had to undergo Yubitsume a total of four times during his twenty year career in the clan. On the first occasion, he was made to slice the joint of his pinkie to atone for causing a bar fight in which a civilian was beaten up, one which drew unnecessary police attention to the clan. Another was punishment for when one of his underlings was caught taking drugs. As the drug user’s superior, the Yakuza member had to share some of the blame for his actions, and was forced to sever his left pinkie even further. He was made to slice off the remainder of his finger when he decided to cut ties with his former clan completely. The former Yakuza’s current wife convinced him to try and turn his life around after spending years in a Japanese prison, but because he was missing his pinkie, his criminal past was there for all prospective employers to see, so it was almost impossible for him to secure a decent job. “The first time I applied for a job, I got cut after the interview. I couldn't write the truth in my resume because I had been in the yakuza for 20 years” he said during an interview “If you don't have fingers, there's no way to get a sales job. If you put on the finger, you can turn your life around”. The anonymous former Yakuza managed to hear of Doctor Hayashi after an exhaustive online search for an artisan prosthetics manufacturer, and says his artificial fingers have aided him in his efforts to change his life for the better. He is currently employed by a company that remodels homes, and says he's only once been asked questions regarding his prosthetic fingers. He has to visit Doctor Hayashi at least four times a year for what he refers to as ‘touch-ups’, a procedure that comprises a re-painting of certain discolored parts of the prosthetics. He's amassed more than one hundred fingers over the years, and keeps extras stored away in case of emergencies. “I take off the prosthetic fingers as soon as I get home”, the ex Yakuza adds, “and I never wear them on my days off”. And so, whenever the COVID-19 travel restrictions come to an end, and you find yourself travelling around Japan, you may find yourself sitting next to someone on the Tokyo metro who has a slightly odd look to one of his pinkie fingers. And if you do, it would be extremely advisable that you’re excessively polite to such a man, because there’s no telling just what horrendous acts of violence he’s committed in the past. Acts of violence he’s not just inflicted on other people, but those he’s inflicted on himself too.
Magia Record Pairing Analysis: Shizuka Tokime & Yuna Kureha
- Why I Ship ShizuYuna: A Highly-Informal Essay
Warnings and Notices:
A lot of stretching, reaching, subjective interpretations, and personal opinions ahead. This is not an essay on how ShizuYuna is objectively good, it’s only about why I like it.I usedextremelyheavy shipping goggles when writing this, please do excuse me.
You likely won’t be fond of the concept of ShizuYuna at all if you dislike Yuna (unless you also hate Shizuka and want them to suffer together or something, in which case…why), neither if you do not like messed-up dumpster fire ships. This analysis is probably unable to change that.
There will be major spoilers for Green Jasper Diviners, Crimson Resolve, and Arc 2 Main Story. Read at your own risk. There will probably also be grammatical errors.
This analysis is made from October to November 2020, before the implementation of Yuna Kureha. Things I talk about here may or may not age well…
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To be completely honest, when I first started shipping ShizuYuna, I saw it as a joke entirely. I went through Chapter 3 of Arc 2 Main Story, and when I came across Chiharu saying that the feelings bothering Shizuka might be love, I figured it would be funny to incorporate this ship in my Mean Girls parody AU as an easy way to resolve the conflict between Futatsugi High and Tokime Private School, two schools I use to represent Promised Blood and Tokime Clan in that AU. However, while I was writing, I listened to songs that suit this pairing (a habit I keep to have inspiration), which is what really caused me to fall down the rabbit hole. I requested ShizuYuna fanart from a few artists, some of whom kindly responded. However, I still only considered it one of my side ships. That was until Shizuka was released as a unit, when her Doppel surprised me quite a bit. I was inspired to make a few short writings for ShizuYuna. The more thoughts I put into this ship, the more amazed at the amount of potential it holds I become… Without further ado, let’s get into this analysis! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First of all, I’d like to show how Shizuka and Yuna are character foils who create an enantiomorphic duality with their similarities and differences. I will start on appearance. Shizuka wears her hair in high twintails, while Yuna lets her hair down. Both of them have gray hair, but in different shades. Shizuka is much taller than Yuna, who is surprisingly short (height difference...). Their Magical Girl outfits are quite similar, both of them being dressed in traditional Japanese attire. They wear long sleeves, obis (belts), and similar-looking zoris (footwear). The difference in their clothing is that the main theme colour of Shizuka’s clothes is purple, while the main theme colour of Yuna’s is yellow. https://preview.redd.it/hw6zkl7yt6y51.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=4665721cfaf5969aba812da183753fa1d7b8d90e https://preview.redd.it/0kk7dwe2u6y51.png?width=300&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee239c533e82fc29cc2be5ae30a9b52415681a28 This also applies to their respective eye colours. Purple and yellow are opposite to each other on the colour wheel and are therefore complementary colour pairs. In terms of eye shape, Shizuka has Tareme eyes (垂れ目, round eyes which droop at the corners), while Yuna has Tsurime eyes (つり目, eyes where the outer corners slant upwards, ending in a distinct sharp point), although Yuna’s are less noticeable due to often being half-closed. Secondly, Shizuka is a DivineKannagi (巫, the Tokime way of saying “Magical Girl”) who hunts Akki (悪鬼, the Tokime way of saying “Witches”), which is one letter away from Oni (鬼). Yuna happens to be an Oni. On a side note, the literal translation of “Akki” would be “Evil Oni”. Akki and Oni can both be translated to “demon”. Moreover, the event Shizuka was introduced in is called “Green Jasper Diviners”, while the one Yuna was introduced in is called “Crimson Resolve”. The Tokime Clan is usually represented by the colour green while Promised Blood is represented by red. Green and red/crimson are, once again, complementary colours. In the events, Shizuka was drowned in a river yet came out alive, while Yuna was burnt in the fire but survived the flames. Now let’s go over their respective backgrounds, as shown in those events:
Shizuka comes from a secluded village, which is later revealed to be a Witch’s labyrinth, where young girls with magic potential were exploited by the head priestess of the village, Mikoshiba, for their wishes. These girls would eventually be put to death in a river, and other people were tricked into believing that they have gone out to the world after their coming-of-age ceremonies.
However, Shizuka survived and revealed to the village the secret of Mikoshiba, who eventually committed suicide. The village was rebuilt and Shizuka, Sunao, and Chiharu went to Kamihama after learning about the purification system there. They also recruited other Magical Girls related to the family of Tokime, forming the Tokime Clan faction. Shizuka vows to fight for Japan and the honour of the Tokime Clan, so she would not let her ancestors’ sacrifices be in vain.
Meanwhile, Yuna comes from Futatsugi City, where the Blood Tragedy took place. After the death of her senpai, Yuna let the Magical Girls of the city know about the truth of the Witches, and the Kyubey-hunting began. Grief Seeds became a scarcity, especially after Witches started disappearing from the city. Many Magical Girls turned into Witches while the rest started hunting each other, and a civil war broke out between Yuna’s Torayacho, Juri’s Ryugasaki, and Ao’s underground faction Hebinomiya.
Yuna heard the despaired voices from deceased peers, and was filled with grief. Her sanity slippage gradually began. At last, she finally learned the truth behind the disappearance of the Witches: it was the Magius, an organization from Kamihama City, who took them away. Completely enraged by the news, Yuna formed a blood pact with Juri and Ao, creating Promised Blood, vowing to get Kamihama’s purification system for themselves and kill the Magical Girls from Kamihama, to avenge all of their peers who died from the Blood Tragedy, so their deaths will not be in vain.
As we can see, despite the slight similarities they share in their backgrounds, they have made the decision to resolve their issues in vastly different ways. Those differences can be observed in the Main Story, where they scoffed at each other, finding their goals idiotic. This creates a mutual dislike between them as soon as they meet each other, due to how obstinate they are when it comes to their own goals. They differ greatly in terms of philosophy. Shizuka is highly stubborn in her ideals and firmly believes in altruism, selflessness, moralism, justice and patriotism. Yuna, on the other hand, is not only pro-violence, but also much more cynical and deems Shizuka’s idealism as foolish. She insulted Tokime Clan’s core values to provoke Shizuka, and had greater success than she expected; it strongly offended and angered her, causing her to loathe Yuna so much that her emotion even made the Kimochi of Disgust show itself. However, Shizuka was not aware that Yuna used to be a believer of altruism who just wanted peace as well, until the Blood Tragedy took a toll on her mental health. Now Yuna has almost completely abandoned her old ideals. Therefore, Yuna’s insult to Shizuka is also an insult to her older self. (Now that I think of it, this scene bears similarities to some parts of the original Madoka Magica anime. It’s kind of funny how the dynamic of such a rarepair to some extent parallels some of the most popular ships in this fandom.) There are other comparisons to be made between them: Shizuka is a country girl, while Yuna is a city girl. Shizuka is the head of a righteous, patriot clan, while Yuna is the leader of a bloodthirsty yakuza organization. Shizuka likes hot taiyaki, while Yuna likes cold ice-cream… Okay, the last one is probably too much of a stretch. In particular, I want to talk about their Yin/Yang symbolic duality:
Shizuka represents Yang. Yang is associated with the Sun and everything bright, positive, warm and active.
As of now, Shizuka acts as one of the heroines of Arc 2, and has a positive, righteous and determined character. She wears purple accompanied by mostly golden and white decorations. Meta-wise, her element is Flame. Shizuka’s transformation is full of bright, golden light, and so is her attack, Magia and Doppel animations.
Shizuka is compared to the Sun by Kagome’s narration. She fights for the Land of the Rising Sun (日の本 or 日ノ本, “Hinomoto”), which is what the Tokime Clan call Japan. Her Doppel is described as having a “brilliant gold shine”, and it references Devi Tara, who, according to Hindu myth, is capable of producing light, heat and energy, and who is said to have brought the sun into existence along with Akshobhya. It also references Tara from Buddhism, who is said to give birth to warmth, compassion and relief from bad karma. More on her Doppel later.
Yuna, on the other hand, represents Yin. Yin is associated with the Moon and everything dark, negative, cold, shady and passive.
As of the current moment, Yuna is the main antagonist and villain of Arc 2. She is an Oni with a horn, and her eyes look dark and dull, as if she is dead. She wears yellow, accompanied by mostly brown and black decorations. When she is calm, she tends to behave coldly in front of her enemies. She is also quite a schemer, much to Juri’s distaste.
This is merely my subjective impression, but to me it seems Yuna’s “Yin” characteristics are exhibited in her soft-spoken voice, her Live2D poses and expressions. Yuna’s natural personality is quite passive, more so than Shizuka’s. This can be seen by comparing their official art. Yuna behaves aggressively only when she is filled with indignation, which is very often nowadays, but regardless. (Yuna’s passivity is more obvious when we contrast her with Juri, but that’s a topic for another day.)
Yuna is shown to be standing in front of the Full Moon in the OP animation of Arc 2. One of the Greek Goddesses of the Moon is Artemis, who is also commonly associated with revenge. This is a translation of how Kagome describes the furious Shizuka provoked by Yuna: “The Sun-like Shizuka-san, swallowed by the dark shadow, is surrounded by the surreal atmosphere of an annular eclipse.” An annular eclipse is a type of solar eclipse, so Kagome’s words can essentially be interpreted as Yuna being the Moon to Shizuka’s Sun.
If we take Magia Report into account, there is also a contrast of Shizuka being trapped behind the ticket gates and Yuna being stuck between the train doors, although that probably does not have much significance to it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now we’ve gone over their differences and similarities, do they actually have any chemistry in the context of the story and the lore? As I’ve mentioned before, none of their encounters in the Main Story went well. Shizuka developed a particular hatred and loathing towards Yuna after she insulted her beliefs in Chapter 2. She cannot forgive or forget what Yuna said to her, and feels greatly bothered by it. The emotion she bears towards Yuna is so strong and intense that it makes her head dizzy, messy and her heart uncomfortable, making Chiharu suspect that her feelings are actually love, which Shizuka of course denied. What if Chiharu was right, though? After all, she was sort of a detective… As the great detective Hercules Poirot said in Five Little Pigs, a murder mystery novel written by Agatha Christie, sometimes it only takes a little psychological knowledge to tell when someone is using hatred to mask their love and attraction. (Not to be too anecdotal, but my personal experience suggests that this is indeed a fairly common occurrence...)
That said, I’m not saying that Shizuka does not genuinely loathe Yuna. I completely believe that she does. I just think that it would be interesting to explore the possibility that she holds both disgust/hatred and love towards her.
Moving on to lore, Shizuka’s Doppel description gives us some very interesting information:
TARA The Doppel of Peace Thousand Hands Shaped The master of this emotion devotes her life to others to a self-sacrificing degree, and because her Doppel shares a similar mindset, the two are deeply linked with each other. This Doppel reacts sensitively to those who its master views as enemies, and if necessary, it will wield violence against said enemies to instill in them an understanding of the wonders of altruism. Those who receive its teachings will suffer hideous injuries, but due to this Doppel’s brilliant gold shine and the artistic nature of the violence it inflicts, its victims become so fascinated as to forget the pain entirely, and are said to become its captives before they even know it.
Shizuka likely considers Yuna her worst enemy, and it is quite possible for Tara to target Yuna. In that respect, the description is basically saying Yuna will eventually become fascinated with Shizuka’s Doppel. Depending on the context, the translation of the sentence “痛みを忘れるほど惚れ惚れとした気持ちになり” can be “falls so deeply in love as to forget the pain entirely” as well as “become so fascinated as to forget the pain entirely”. Take that as you will. Yuna’s element/attribute is not confirmed yet due to not being released, but there is a possibility that she would be Forest. If that is the case, it could potentially explain why Shizuka’s Doppel is Attribute Strengthened Damage while her Magia is not. Note that unless I am wrongly informed, there are no other units like that, except for the newly released Vampire Kanagi. Furthermore, one of Shizuka’s Spirit Enhancement passive abilities is “Forest Attribute Damage Reduction”. This kind of SE ability is quite rare; as far as I know, the only other 2 examples of it are Sasara's and Natsuki’s SE passive. In addition, as a matter of personal taste, while I enjoy hero-villain pairings, I don’t like the dynamic of “overpowered supervillain x kind-hearted helpless maiden”. Shizuka may be an inexperienced goody-two-shoes, but she certainly isn’t a damsel-in-distress. She isn’t any weaker, less intelligent, or less powerful than Yuna; in fact, she can even be considered Yuna’s natural predator (as I’ve mentioned above, Shizuka is a Kannagi/Diviner, while Yuna can technically be considered an Akki). The description of this Doppel also suggests the same thing. Other than that, the name of the Doppel, “Tara” could be a reference to Devi Tara from Hinduism, Tara from Buddhism, and/or goddess Tala from Tagalog mythology.
Devi Tara (Hinduism): There are a few different versions of the story of this Hindu goddess. Some notable ones include Tara being a demon-slayer, and Tara being the co-creator of the Sun, which I have talked about earlier. (On a side note, Devi Tara also wears a tiger-skin skirt, just like an oni does in Japanese folklore.)
Tara (Buddhism): Tara is an important figure in Buddhism, known as the “mother of liberation”. Tara is known to manifest as a teenage girl. Her titles include "loving mother", "supreme mother", "universal mother" and "mother of all Buddhas". Motherhood is a central part of her theme.
Yuna’s character could have been inspired by Hariti from Buddhism, also known as Kishimojin (鬼子母神) in Japanese. In Hariti's past life, when she was a mortal, she had an accidental abortion due to dancing when she was performing in front of a giant crowd, but no one in the audience helped or pitied her at all. She swore to devour all of the children in that city as her revenge. After reborning, Hariti became a demon with millions of children, who she loved and doted upon. In order to feed them, she abducted and killed the children of other people. The Buddha stopped her, asking her to think about the feelings of all of the parents of those children she killed, to which she replies that her children will have nothing to eat if she stops killing other people’s children. Thus the Buddha promised Hariti that she would always be provided with food if she could swear never to kill others again, to which Hariti agreed.
Hariti’s story has obvious parallels to Yuna’s, and it features the theme of motherhood, just like Tara’s. (Not particularly related, but perhaps to play into her tigeoni symbolism, when Yuna threatens her enemies, she’d sometimes say that she will consume/devoueat them.)
Goddess Tala (Tagalog mythology): Tala, based on Hindu goddess Tara, is the goddess of the morning and evening star in Tagalog mythology. Not a lot of things about this goddess ties her to Shizuka or Yuna, but there’s one part. In a version of the myth, solar eclipses are explained by sun god Arao getting close enough to bite moon goddess Buan (Tala’s mother), whose action enraged him. As I mentioned above, the Shizuka enraged by Yuna is compared to the solar eclipse.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a pairing, ShizuYuna really has a lot of potentials to be explored. Imagine the sheer amount of drama this ship is capable of creating. It’s the definition of forbidden love (*insert obligatory shocked Hitomi face here*). The innocent, righteous head of the Tokime Clan’s first love is a ruthless demon and a yakuza leader? Isn’t that outrageous? The respected mayor’s daughter is dating a country girl who has never been to a city before? How scandalous! And that’s not to mention all the internal conflicts this could create… This ship is like a gold mine to (well, my kind of) angst lovers. It’s been said that opposites attract; we’re drawn to others out of needs and desires that are unfulfilled in our lives.
Shizuka grew up in a sheltered environment where she has always been taught to be utterly selfless and to dedicate her entire life to the protection of other people, instead of having any focus at all on her own selfish thoughts and needs. She is very proud of her altruism and uses it to define who she is, but what if, buried deep down inside her heart, is a bit of her that wants more? What if the reason why she was so triggered by Yuna’s words was that there is a small, subconscious part of her that agrees?
To Shizuka, Yuna is the embodiment of the opposite of everything she stands for, the embodiment of everything she despises… What if one day she realizes that she has feelings for her, feelings of love that are born out of her deeply-repressed longing to rebel, to be free, to act on selfish will and passion? What cruel irony would that be...
Meanwhile, on Yuna’s part, she does not seem to have any type of particularly strong emotions towards Shizuka, yet. However, if Shizuka’s Doppel description means anything, there is quite the possibility… Would the opposite-attracts rule apply to Yuna as well? She knows very well that she is a sinful person who will go to Hell eventually, so what if she becomes irrationally fascinated by the sacredness and purity Shizuka bears, despite being disillusioned enough to think that under her golden appearance, Shizuka's merely an empty shell fueled by foolish moralism? Does Yuna see a fragment of herself or her senpai in Shizuka?
As a side note, comparably popular ships involving Yuna, specifically Juri/Yuna and Hikaru/Yuna, also seemed to be unrequited at first glance, and in both situations, Yuna seemed to be on the receiving end of the feelings, never the giver. However, as the plot progressed, it's shown that’s it's not necessarily true. It’s possible for the same to apply to ShizuYuna.
Additionally, there’s also a small thing that sounds like good fanfic material to me. Shizuka learned Denshin: Hitomi-Awase (伝心・瞳合わせ) from her mother, thinking about using it on her enemies. For now, she has used it on Ao in Chapter 3 of the Main Story, and it is implied that she has used it on Yuna in an episode of Magia Report. According to Sforzando from Discord, “Denshin: Hitomi-Awase” translates to “Heart Sending: Locked Gaze”. It is a part of Tokime Isshinryu and a skill that can be used to make your opponent lose consciousness just by staring into their eyes and conveying your powerful emotions to them. Any kind of emotions. This is quite a curious trick, with (unintended?) romantic undertones to it. I mean, it’s literally the act of intensely staring into each other’s eyes and communicating feelings via the connection. Not to mention how suggestive the name is... Eye contact is a powerful stimulator of affection. It is often said that locking eyes with someone could potentially make them fall in love with you. A bit of quick research told me this is because (excuse me for pulling a Touka here) your brain is thought to release phenylethylamine and oxytocin during prolonged eye contact, chemicals that cause feelings of attraction and attachment, respectively. Side note, Hitomi-Awase reminds me of that text post which goes “oh to be a reckless young protagonist pinning my queer coded nemesis up against a wall in a fight while we make tense and homoerotic eye contact”. This obviously isn’t evidence of any kind, just a dumb thing I’d like to mention. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In conclusion, despite how small of a ship it is, there are many reasons why I like Shizuka and Yuna as a pairing. Once again, I’d like to remind you that this analysis is highly subjective and informal, with a lot of stretching and reaching involved. Still, I hope you enjoyed reading this, and I’d be really happy if this silly analysis of mine could convert anyone to my ship! I really wish ShizuYuna could get more fans and more content… Feel free to share this, or give me any feedback regarding this analysis!
